A December reward for students happened today in the Westmont Hilltop School District. The administration awarded all students with no disciplinary referrals, failing grades and unexcused absences the opportunity to go ice skating at the 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial. Superintendent Thomas Mitchell said it was a great external motivator for the students to blow off a little bit of steam before Christmas break. “Really, it’s been awesome that the War Memorial was able to partner with us and give us a really good deal on the ice time and work with us on the rentals.
ALTOONA, Pa (WJAC) — People in Altoona came together Friday to remember the 15-year-old who was shot and killed this week. Members of the Altoona community gathered outside Jefferson Park for a vigil for Altoona School District student Devon Pfirsching, who was killed in a shooting Tuesday night. A wooden cross with Devon’s name inscribed is attached to the fence outside Overflow Church near Jefferson Park. A collection of flower bouquets has grown over the last several days as friends, neighbors and classmates stopped by to pay their respects.
JOHNSTOWN — Chuck Noll took over as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach before the start of the 1969 season. The franchise needed a good leader, coming off a 2-11-1 season in 1968. Pittsburgh got a good leader. Former WJAC sports director Bill Wilson interviewed Noll, before his first Steelers training camp. Noll said he would demand mental and physical toughness. His style created a winning culture. The Steelers won four Super Bowls (1974, 1975, 1978, 1979) with Noll as the head coach.
Somerset Co., PA (WJAC) — State police in Somerset County say a Pittsburgh man is facing charges after he allegedly crashed into an occupied camper and then began firing a rifle at Scottyland Park on Memorial Day. Police say troopers were dispatched to the park, located in Middlecreek Township, during the early morning hours of Memorial Day, for a report of an intoxicated man firing a gun. Troopers say when they arrived on scene, they observed a 2010 Lincoln Towncar that had crashed into a camper and golf cart on a private campsite.
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — ESPN has apologized to the organization that administers the Sports Emmy Awards for submitting fake names in categories where they were not eligible to win. "Some members of our team were clearly wrong in submitting certain names that may go back to 1997 in Emmy categories where they were not eligible for recognition or statuettes," the network said in a statement Thursday. HARRISBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — The Pennsylvania Supreme Court Disciplinary Counsel has suspended the law license of Somerset County District Attorney Jeff Thomas indefinitely as a sexual assault case against him continues to move through the courts. The per curiam order filed Wednesday states, "This order should not be construed as removing Respondent from elected office and is limited to the temporary suspension of his license to practice law." Thomas has already taken a self-imposed leave of absence from the position since his arrest last month.
JOHNSTOWN -- Southern Airways will begin offering three daily nonstop flights from Johnstown to Pittsburgh International Airport and Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. starting Nov. 19. The flights will be based out of John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh. The routes are subsidized by the government as part of the Essential Air Service program run by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The program is meant to connect secondary airports with those in larger, nearby hubs.

LONDON (AP) — British performer Tim Brooke-Taylor, a member of comedy trio The Goodies, has died after contracting the new coronavirus. He was 79. Brooke-Taylor’s agent says he died Sunday morning“from COVID-19.” Brooke-Taylor was part of Cambridge University’s Footlights revue, the breeding ground of several generations of British comic talent. He broke into radio and television comedy in the 1960s alongside future Monty Python members John Cleese and Graham Chapman.
