JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Maurice Stokes was a dominant force during his career at St. Francis College in the mid-1950s. He led St. Francis to the national invitational tournament in 1955, and despite a fourth-place finish, he earned Most Valuable Player honors. After his career with the Red Flash, Stokes then starred for three years with the NBA's Cincinnati Royals, but during the last game of the 1958 season, he suffered a head injury.
Jefferson Co., PA (WJAC) — Last week, a Brookville Police officer says he pulled over an Amish buggy and charged the driver with driving under the influence. Officer Shawn Hollobaugh said a normal evening of patrolling led to one of the weirdest traffic stops of his career. “Oh, it’s in the top 10, trust me. Maybe top five," he joked. "It’s definitely unusual to say the least.” In what ended up being an odd patrol outing last Sunday evening, officer Shawn Hollobaugh arrested a man for operating his Amish horse and buggy while under the influence near the intersection of Valley and Main streets in Brookville.
NEW YORK (TND) — "The Portal" installation in New York City is back! The public technological art sculpture linking Dublin to NYC reopened on Sunday after it was temporarily shut down due to "inappropriate behavior," according to organizers. Spectators are able to witness, again, a live stream connection between the two exhibits, but only during a set number of hours. Organizers posted on Flatiron NoMad Partnership's Facebook page that the sculpture will operate daily from 6 a.
CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities in Cambria County say two men are behind bars following a months-long drug trafficking investigation in the city of Johnstown. Officials say the investigation began in February when authorities received an alleged tip of suspected drug activity at a residence along Solomon Street. Investigators say on Friday, April 26th, authorities executed a search warrant at the home and arrested 43-year-old Dashaun CarMichael and 22-year-old Tishaun CarMichael.
DUBOIS – Penn Highlands DuBois nurses prefer not to have a union, results of a vote held Thursday and Friday showed. Jeanne Askey, a staff registered nurse at Penn Highlands DuBois, said 209 nurses voted no and 140 voted yes to the union. Askey said there were 20-30 eligible people who did not vote. The nurses were voting on union representation from the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals.
Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Patton Township Police Department say they are investigating an alleged act of vandalism that occurred earlier this week at the Starbucks location on North Atherton Street. Police say officers were dispatched early Tuesday morning for a report of criminal mischief at the coffee chain. Authorities say officers discovered spray paint on the outside of the building, as well as damage to a window and a shattered glass front door.
DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa (WHP) — A pregnant 19-year-old died Monday after she was shot in Harrisburg, the Dauphin County coroner announced Tuesday. According to the coroner, Tyemeshia Miller of Harrisburg was shot in the area of North 4th and Woodbine Streets. Altoona, PA (WJAC) — Altoona police say two teens are facing arson charges after reportedly setting fire to a wooded area near Garfield Park Tuesday afternoon. Police say crews were dispatched to the 1100 block of 25th Street after a State Parole agent witnessed the two teens start the fire and flee the scene. Investigators say the fire "spread rapidly" and burned an area the approximate size of a football field.
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — The Pennsylvania Game Commission is clearing things up after a post on social media claimed the 2020 hunting seasons have been canceled due to coronavirus. “The Pennsylvania Game Commission has not suspended, altered or changed any hunting regulations, seasons or bag limits in response to the COVID-19 outbreak,” the commission said on Facebook. The commission said that a social media post with the agency’s name and logo has been circulating claiming the hunting seasons have been canceled.
